Asbestos Awareness
Course Details
The aim of this course is to ensure that participants gain a clear understanding of the risks associated with asbestos exposure and the correct procedures to follow to avoid such risks in the workplace. This course provides essential knowledge for identifying asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and working safely in environments where asbestos may be present.
Certification & Assessment
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an Asbestos Awareness Certificate, valid for 3 years. Assessment is based on a written theory test to ensure understanding of key concepts and legal obligations.
Who should attend?
This course is designed for workers who may come into contact with asbestos during their daily work activities, including:
- General construction workers
- Tradespeople (e.g. electricians, plumbers, painters, etc.)
- Maintenance personnel
- Site managers and supervisors
Course Objectives
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Identify the common types of asbestos and their uses
- Understand the health risks associated with asbestos exposure
- Recognise asbestos-containing materials in the workplace
- Understand the legal requirements under Irish legislation
- Follow correct procedures to avoid disturbing asbestos
- Know what to do in the event of accidental asbestos disturbance

Course covers the following:
- Overview of asbestos and its historical use
- Health risks and diseases caused by asbestos
- Identification of asbestos-containing materials
- Legislation and responsibilities (e.g. Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations 2006–2010)
- Risk assessment and safe systems of work
- Emergency procedures for accidental exposure
- Employer and employee duties under Irish law
- Record-keeping and reporting requirements
- Written theory test
